In « Margem Sul », I explored the current social and political situation in Portugal, focusing on the heritage of the Salazarist dictatorship. I visited the “South Margin“, across from Lisbon, specifically the Segundo Torrão shantytown. This area, once a fishing village, is now mixed with the diasporas communities, forming a united and supportive society. I met local figures, mainly from the rap scene, who speak out against the gentrification of Trafaria. Since late 2022, the government has been demolishing homes under the guise of security, without clear explanations. My project aims to document this struggle and give a voice to the residents. I worked on this project from February to June 2023, and my goal is to publish the book and bring this narrative to life, which echoes the broader issue of gentrification and rent increase. The grant would allow me to return to the location and create a new series of images with a greater focus on female presence in my work. My five objectives are: to produce more images (5 rolls of 120 film), to plan a display for an exhibition, to create textual material to accompany the images, to produce zines for distribution Lisbon’s institutions and to have a series of print for sale, with the proceeds going to the Segundo Torrão community.
