The researcher Pilar Burillo defines Demothanasia as the process by which political actions or omissions lead to the disappearance of the population of a territory. Death by depopulation is slow and silent. It is merciless with the territory, nature and heritage. The depopulation of rural areas is one of the causes of numerous environmental problems such as the increase in the voracity of forest fires or the increase in soil erosion. The situation is dramatic for the people who live or, rather, resist in rural areas, who are mostly elderly people. They live in the most absolute loneliness in lands where services are non-existent. If there are no social and political changes these will be the last inhabitants of rural areas and the last glimpses of an ancient culture. The continuation of my project with the possible grant would begin in December 2024 and continue until July 2025. The purpose of the grant would be to obtain about 30 more photographs for the body of work around the theme in order to create an exhibition. The exhibition would consist of fifty photographs that relate the social, environmental and cultural loss issues surrounding rural exodus. This exhibition would have a tour in cultural spaces and museums that try to recover or preserve the peasant culture that today is being lost in the world.
