Project dates: Mar 1-Mar 28, 2025 Project description: "Chairs of Cairo" is an expansion of a project started two years ago entitled, "Chairs of Zamalek." The "Chairs" series delves into the symbolism embedded within the humble, and sometimes ramshackle, chairs that patiently line the sidewalks of Cairo. These communal objects, utilized by all and owned by none, take center stage in my exploration of cultural alienation, the transient nature of humanity, and the experience of visitor-hood. The expansion of the project beyond the neighborhood of Zamalek into Cairo as a whole aims to explore the nuances of the city's different districts. This typology aims to show quietly, yet boldly, the varying norms, values, and environments between the societal castes within Cairo. Project plan: Darb1718, in the heart of Old Cairo, has offered me a residency to complete "Chairs," however, no stipend is included. My plan is to conduct intensive fieldwork locating and photographing diverse chairs throughout Cairo. After photography is complete, I will work towards an exhibition and publication of the photos. The scholarship money will go towards travel expenses, a laptop, and materials for printing and exhibition setup. Goals: 1. A gallery exhibition at Darb1718 2. A photobook entitled "Chairs of Cairo" 3. Produce 40 new images for "Chairs" 4. Lead a workshop on photography for the community of Darb1718 5. Engage with local photo co-ops to explore experimental development techniques
