Flight doesn't begin at the sea. It doesn't begin at the fence, or at the border checkpoint. It begins much earlier. Long before people board boats or bargain with smugglers, they enter a phase of survival, preparation, and waiting. Mbeubeuss, a massive open-air landfill on the outskirts of Dakar, Senegal, is one of those places. It has become an unlikely waypoint on the journey toward Europe—a place where people from Senegal and neighboring countries come not to settle, but to gather what they need for the next step. They come from the Sahel, from drought-stricken regions and collapsed rural economies. Some are fleeing political instability, others the impossibility of making a living. Word spreads through families, friends. This project is not about arrival. It is not about the endpoint of a journey. It is about the middle. About those who are already in motion, but haven't yet left. People who exist in transit-economically, geographically, emotionally. Reaching for Dusk is an attempt to document this overlooked phase. It tells the story of lives suspended between hardship and intent, of people who have not yet crossed, but who are already on their way.
