Sonder (starts 2024, Ongoing) explores masculinity through the lens of domesticity, focusing on male family relationships and the spaces and objects shaping everyday life. Set between London and Taichung—two culturally distinct cities influencing my identity—the project investigates how masculinity is expressed, negotiated, and reimagined within the family home. Often coded as a feminine space, the home contrasts with traditional masculine domains like workplaces or sports fields. By centering the domestic sphere, the series challenges these binaries, revealing how care, intimacy, and vulnerability exist in male relationships behind closed doors. Blending documentary and staged approaches, I collaborate with 10 families, using the home as a stage to explore the line between the natural and the performed. Everyday objects, clothing, and routines become vessels for personal, familial, and cross-cultural heritage. The title, “Sonder”—the realization that each passerby lives a life as vivid and complex as your own—captures the project’s ethos of universality, shared human experience, and cross-cultural resonance. PLAN & GOALS Commission a stylist and set designer to develop the project in a staged, fine art direction. (last image) Cover travel, casting more families, and production costs. Produce 10–15 new images. Put together a public exhibition in London and/or Taiwan. Publish a photobook and expand networks with editors, curators, publishers, and institutions.
